The Newport, Columbus, OH, July 10, 2001 Setlist: Backslide, High, Lyla, Eden, Loose Cannon, Baba O'Riley I drove about 4.5 hours down to Columbus, OH to see MF4 again. I got to the Newport and was driving around trying to find somewhere to park (no real parking lot there) and somehow managed to get on the street that ran right behind the venue where their loading the equiptment in. Art from Everclear was back there and he walked right in front of my car. It was a little surreal :) Marty was back there too so I said hi from my car then went to find a parking spot. I walked back to the venue and since Columbus was one of the stops on the Honda Civic tour, they had this Honda Civic out that was painted to look like the cover of Everclear's latest album. There were about 50 people who had won a key to try to start the car. The key that started the car was the winner. The Everclear guys were standing around watching to see who would win. I watched that for a little while then I walked back to the back of the venue and stopped to talk to Zia. Then he had to go do something and Alessandro came out. We talked about that car that the Honda people were giving away. The thing is painted with black and orange stripes and stars. Alessandro said something about if you look at it long enough you'll probably see those 3-D images you see when you stare at stereoscopic art. Yeah! Then I went and got in line. They didn't start letting us in until about 7pm. I found a good spot on this raised area around the main floor, right up front on the left (Alessandro's side) and was right in front of the speakers. I saw Marty for a minute during Flipp's set and said hi. He tried to get me a photo pass so i could take pictures but who's ever in charge of that at that show was really stingy with photo passes. Flipp, once again, was alot of fun. Art came on stage and played with them. After their set I asked this girl standing a couple people down from me if I could switch with her for MF4's set, to be closer to the stage, and she was really cool and let me stand in her spot. And there was this other girl behind me, Jessica, who I guess got to meet the guys before the show. I couldn't really hear most of what she said to me but she seemed very excited for Mf4 and EC. Now the good part :) The guys came out and rocked! Wow! For me, what was best was that I was right in front of the speakers and I could really, really hear Myles and Alessandro. I think Alessandro's mike was at a good level because you could hear both of them sing so the harmony sounded awesome. I think that Myles was even more into it in Columbus than in Grand Rapids! He was jumping way up into the air - it was awesome! And that was the best i've heard Lyla. Wow! They had so much energy for that song. Alessandro had a little trouble with his guitar, i think around Loose Cannon time, he sort of had to tune it right there on stage. That was too bad. And I guess Marty's bass was out of tune at the beginning of the set (that's what he told me) but I couldn't tell. After Loose Cannon they decided to do Baba O'Riley (it's a song by The Who, aka "Teenage Wasteland"). I love Sick & Wrong, but I am so glad they played that song instead, 'cause they didn't get to the night before. It was so amazing. And Alessandro sang the line "It's only teenage wasteland" and they put a spot light on him. That was cool. During their set I saw Art and Craig from Everclear, watching from the balcony. A bunch of people around me were like, ooh, Art! I was like, yeah, cool, but watch the Mayfield Four!!! After they played, I left the front, and went out this side door for some fresh air and saw these two people wearing MF4 shirts, Lorenzo and Jennifer. Turns out they were at the show in Grand Rapids on monday and had been at the same MF4/Big Wreck show I'd been at the first time I saw the 4, three years ago! Meeting them was almost as cool as seeing the 4 'cause it's so nice to talk to other fans, especially ones who've been to some of the same shows as me :) Lorenzo is in a band that's going to be opening for the band Soulcracker (from VH1's band's on the run) in september here where i live. After that I decided that I couldn't stay for Everclear's set. I really wish i could have 'cause they put on such a great show, but I had a 4.5 hour drive ahead of me and had to be at work today by 9. So I went out to see if i could find any of the guys to say goodbye. I found Marty and talked to him for a little while. He was heading out for something to eat so I walked with him for a little while, while i tried to remember where i had parked my car and we saw Myles. Myles was headed back towards the venue so I walked back there with him (and eventually remembered where my car was). Myles was going to talk to some radio people who were at the show. Uhm, that's all i can think of right now. Review by Julia Plummer |
