"Second Skin"
The Mayfield Four
(Epic)

Rating: 2.5 stars

For every Top 40 breakthrough that lands on the charts for a few months, there's about 300 unluckier bands who wallow in obscurity for years.

The Mayfield Four just might wind up as one of these bands, through no fault of their own. Stylistically speaking, there's not much different with "Second Skin" and 99 percent of its peers.

"Loose Cannon" is just as good of a rock tune as any you're likely to hear on a modern-rock station. At times, the vocals tend to switch back and forth between tough-guy persona and quirky eccentric, but never so much as to create an uneven blend.

The highest point on the disc is the closing "Summer Girl," which finds the band stepping back and disposing of their over-the-top image. The falsetto vocals stand at a 90-degree angle from the rest of the tunes, miraculously without sounding out of place.
